Things don’t get smaller

Q. How did you become an artist?

There was no moment when suddenly I woke up to be an artist or my life changed dramatically. First of all, it was when I was 14 years old I began to show interest in the city and architecture in it. I studied architecture for a while but soon I found out that I don’t fit in there. Still, I was interested in that field, looking for other creative fields in which I could still explore that world; after all, I began studying interactive media. After graduating college, I got a job at a company, working as a UX designer. It was that moment when I started to draw something I truly wanted to. I felt that my design was limited by the system of the company or some specific characteristics of the device to which my work gets applied to. I wanted to add more ‘thoughts’ into my artwork.

Q. Is there a certain reason that you choose the city as your work subject?

I understand that many people hope to escape from big cities. However, I rather enjoy getting into the inside of the cities. I grew up in the cities since I was young, and I traveled around many countries and cities with my mother who loved to travel. Such experiences, I believe, are the most crucial aspects of my life. Thanks to those experiences, I got to understand better about the world.

Q. Your works about Korean culture stand out. What inspired you to work on such a theme?

It was when my life at work started to feel boring. Photos of big cities in Asia which I faced at that time encouraged my desire to leave for travel. Fortunately, one of my friends was studying in Korea so I left for Seoul. The trip was a 9-day schedule and it was absolutely amazing. It felt like those nine days flew by in a second. So, I decided to quit my job to travel to Korea a little bit longer. I expected to spend a couple of months at first but it got longer; right, 5 whole years. In Hongdae district. While staying in Korea, I was captured by small and little things that build the city. Every food, culture and every moment created by such thing were completely different from those of my home country. I wanted to share that unique atmosphere and mood of Korea with others so that I began working on the ‘Night Life in Seoul’ series.

Q. What inspires you to work?

Usually, it’s from trivial things that I can encounter in big cities. Sometimes I focus on local buildings or spatial placement of the city center. Or sometimes, I focus on really small things like food or neon sign. I would like to visualize cultural phenomena by capturing the very typical scenes in that certain city.

Q. Please describe your style shown in your artwork.

My current style can be summarized in several. I usually use the isometric drawing method, which means I don’t draw things in perspective. Each line stands paralleled as if in Ikea or Lego manual. I used to play Lego or Sim city games since I was young but that might be why. So, there is no object standing too far or getting smaller within my work. Everything is treated in the same size and the same importance. That’s why I consider it quite seriously how to place each object in which location within the screen. On the one hand, I actually think the isometric drawing method represents our reality somewhat better in a way. After drawing shapes using the isometric drawing method, I put strong colors and dark shadows on it. Sure, this is more about my personal preference but I think this method makes each scene more dramatic. Simple objects seem much more sturdy and more significant.

Q. What does Art mean to you?

Delivering a message, something fun. In order to achieve these goals better, I work hard to find a better combination of colors and shapes. When I spot that right fit, it feels ‘something truly right’. As if it was supposed to be like that from the beginning.
